History
Wetumka was named for a
Creek town in Alabama. The word means "tumbling water."
It is located in Hughes County, Oklahoma.
According to renowned Wetumka expert, B.J. Osborn,
Wetumka was founded around 1900 and grew quickly, with over 30 brick buildings
shooting up on Main Street in just a few years. Like many towns in
Oklahoma, it promised to be a booming metropolis.
Although the booming metropolis never came to be,
Wetumka has changed in many ways over the years. It is now
called home by approximately 1,500 residents.
Wetumka's claim-to-fame is being home of the
World-Famous Sucker Day Celebration. Learn more about Sucker
Day and its history here.
